Ⅰ.what is kaolin?
Kaolin is also called china clay, it’s a kind of clay made up by kaolinite. After a longtime complete efflorescence, there were kaolin, quartz and some other soluble salt built from feldspar, and they drifted with rain and river before sediment again. At this time quartz has already separated from soluble salt, so that kaolin could be got. Kaolin makes up a large percentage of ceramic body, which is one of the best raw material for ceramic.
All kinds of mine on the earth can be mainly sorted into energetic mine, metallic mine and non-metallic mine three types. And kaolin is one important kind of non-metallic mine, which
is called The Four Non-metallic Mine accompanying with mica, quartz and calcium carbonate.
Kaolin is mainly made up of tufty kaolinite mineral with particle size smaller than 2um in shape of flake and tube, its ideal chemical style is Al2O3-2SiO2-2H2O, which main composition is kaolinite and Halloysite, there are also Montmorillonite, pyrophyllite, Ileite Clay quartz and feldspar accompanying with the kaolinite mineral. Kaolin’s chemical composition contain a large quantity of Al2O3, SiO2, a little of Fe2O3, TiO2 and little of K2O, Na2O, CaO,MgO ect.
There is a large quantity of kaolin in China, distributing widely. In recent years, more storage was proved up in Guangxi province of China.
China is the country that discover and utilize kaolin firstly. Back to 3000 years ago in Shang
Period, the white pottery with reticle was made from kaolin. Ceramics produced in city of
JingDezheng in Jiangxi province are known from home and abroad. Now the name of china clay came from the kaolin mountain beside kaolin village in east suburb of JingDezhen.
ⅡThe use of kaolin
Pure Kaolin has high brightness, soft texture, ability to easy disperse, suspend in
water, good plasticity, high cohesiveness and fine electric insulating ability. It is also
anti soluble to acid. Many of its properties in physics and chemistry make it ideal for
use in paper making, ceramics, rubber, paint, medicament, defence and some other
industries. Kaolin is favoured as filler in rubber production for its low cost and stiffening
or reinforcing characteristics.
It is reported that there are some factories utilization of Kaolin in manufacturing of
cutting tools and aiguilles in lathes instead of steel in Japan. Especially in recent years
technology has been developed so fast which makes Kaolin more widely used, in
some high-tech areas, even refractory ceramics in atom reactors, space shuttle and
astral-airship.
Current worldwide output of kaolin is about 40 million tons. Among this number 23.5
million tons is refined clay. Paper manufacture industry is the main consumer.Kaolin
as paper clay include natural brightness, ink absorption characteristics, chemical
inertness, and superior dispersability when introduced into the water solutions from
which the final paper mixture is derived. It is common in paper that filler accounts for
10-20% of total weight and for cardboard besides as filler, there is paint coating. So
paint and filler accounts for 20-35% of total weight. Good covering ability and lustre
property can be gained due to usage of kaolin in paper making. Usage of Kaolin can
increase brightness of paper, opaque property and improve quality of paper. |
